Mission:
Impending Midnight
Location: Space
Timeline: After the Ground Campaign and the Space Campaign
Previously, on Star Trek: Missouri:
I-402 blinked and began to move away from the memorial.
"While I was shutting her out, I noticed that I-400 has built a labrythine contraption out of this planetoid, connecting old mineshafts with city sewer systems, it's all rather complicated..." She explained. "What I'm trying to say is... Stopping this rock won't be easy: A sudden deceleration could cause the whole thing to crumble to pieces, and I'd hate to think what that would do and the lives it would disrupt."
"Well, would you rather stand around with our thumbs up our asses until this thing rams into the galactic barrier and kills everyone?" Akira pointed out rather bluntly. "If we've got a means to stop this thing, then let's do it and worry about the consequences later."
"Then you understand that my orders stand." She said. "The Missouri will not be lost. Not today."
Katrina didn't move. She met Patricia's stare with a calm, understanding gaze, then dipped her head easily in acknowledgement. "You're the Captain," Katrina pointed out. "You always had the final say."
"Then it's settled." Patricia resumed her seat.
And now, the conclusion:
Katrina turned her head slightly, peering at the main viewer with a contemplative look. "It all seems to go back to that damn monument..." she murmured, more to herself than anyone else.
Find confidence, the Enisgn in the cubby spoke her mind. "Ma'am. We can use Icarus to fulfill Commander Chance's plan instead of using Missouri." Running a hand over the scanner, she perked up. "The aft is destroyed, but I'm sure Commander Star has a trick to make sure it can survive its trip to its final resting place."
Patricia considered Andrew's suggestion.
"Do we know if there's another ship in the fleet with the heavy lifting capabilities that would be required to pull that off?"
Andrew had kept a comms link open, so he could be in the loop; to say he was proud of the Ensign in his science division would be an understatement. "=/\= Andrew here. If we want to make a big boom, it's going to need speed, and a tractor won't help!" Andrew went quiet for a few seconds, trying to think. "... We could use a Klingon starship, those Captains would do anything for honour!"
"Understood." Patricia nodded, turning to Katrina: "Commander, get me ahold of a Klingon cruiser: Perhaps you might get your wish after all..."
Her wish? No. Katrina frowned slightly. This was not her... wish. She didn't want to play bumper starships with a Borg cube, but she didn't see many other options.
Nodding, she scanned for the least damaged Klingon ship, the one that stood the greatest chance of making it to its target, then opened the channel.
A moment later, she reported simply, "Got one, sir. On screen."
The viewscreen switched to the bridge of a Vor'cha class cruiser and its Klingon captain:
"This is Captain Davahk of the House Khartan:" The burly Klingon man introduced himself. "To what do I owe the displeasure of talking to a... Human female?"
"Then you'll be displeased to hear what I'm about to say next:" Patricia responded. "I want you to ram one of those cubes towing the planetoid, and consider that if you refuse, dishonor will be the least of your problems."
Davahk took a moment to ponder Patricia's directions.
"And if our attack is successful, the halls of Sto-vo-kor will ring with our names." A wry smile spread on the Klingon captain's face. "Perhaps today is a good day to die!"
Without further word, the communications link was terminated, and soon after that, one of the cubes suffered catastrophic damage as the Vor'cha class cruiser accelerated into it at a higher warp. The Missouri shook as the cube exploded while slowing down to impulse. However, the Missouri didn't stop shaking afterwards: Charlie tried her best to keep her steady, but it was as if they were suddenly flying through some kind of turbulence:
"Captain, it's getting difficult to hold our course!" Charlie reported as her fingers danced over the smooth surface of the CONN station attempting to compensate for this unseen phenomenon.
"Status on the integrity of the planetoid?"
"Integrity failing - it's coming apart!" The Ensign within the cubby shouted, though she was inexperienced, she was in a slight panic, unsure if she'd like it out alive.
"Damn," Patricia muttered, pressing the display on her chair. "Star, you're about to add transwarp beaming to your resume: Start configuring the transporters to get the away team back at our current velocity."
Andrew felt a lump in his throat. He had done warp beaming, but transwrap was a whole new ballgame. Where was Lt Pharos Ventari? He should have returned by now. Hoping it'd be the same, Andrew thought of it as the same as warp beaming. =/\= "Engineering, Roger Captain." =/\= was what Andrew said, but what he really wanted to admit was that he was slightly out of his depth.
Patricia then turned to Joe:
"Mister Nixon, get me ahold of the away team:" She ordered.
"Opening a channel." Joe responded.
"Missouri to away team: The planetoid's starting to fall apart." She said. "Give me some good news, Kogami!"
=A=Nope!=A= came Akira's response. =A=At this rate, Captain, the only way we're getting out of here is you crack this thing open like a watermelon!=A=
Patricia sat back and pondered what she had just been told. There were definitely still civilians on that rock, and at this point, any further evacuation would be nigh impossible.
"Well, as a wise Vulcan once said; the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Patricia decided.
The turbulence the Missouri was flying through suddenly seemed to grow more pronounced. Katrina flinched, bracing herself as she checked her sensor readings. "The turbulence gets worse up ahead. It's like we're flying into a subspace hurricane," she reported. "This is not normal."
"Star, how are those transporters coming along?" Patricia asked, injecting some desperation into her tone. They were only going to have one chance at blowing up the flying rock, and if they couldn't keep within transporter range, the away team might as well be good as gone.
=/\= "We're ready Captain!" =/\= He replied, but thoughtfully, he and the group of engineers had no idea if it would work, in theory it could work... Guess it was time to put that theory to work.
"Ops, do we have positive locks on the away team?" Patricia asked.
Joe opened a communication line to the transporter rooms, listening to the crewmen on duty as they worked to get a lock on the away team:
"Transporter room's reporting they have positive locks on Kogami, I-402, and the twins." He reported, listening further to the comms chatter. "But negative locks on T'eseri, Erbun, or any of the marines."
"Keep trying, damnit!" Patricia ordered.
"Captain:" Charlie interjected. "We're not going to be able to hold our current course for much longer. Strongly advise we prioritize the ones we have locks on."
Patricia swore under her breath. She knew that time was already up, and that her third doctor and second marine detachment had been effectively sentenced to death.
"Cooke to transporter room:" Patricia spoke directly to the transporter operators. "energize."
