Specifications - USS Missouri
Summary
Since it's introduction in 2370, the Intrepid Class has time and again proven itself to be a "quick and smart" platform for Starfleet's long range exploration starships. Coming in at less than half the size of a Galaxy class starship, the Intrepid class was made famous by the USS Voyager, and that vessel's 8 year-long adventure in the Delta Quadrant.
Following the return of Voyager from the Delta Quadrant and her subsequent decommissioning in 2378, improvements based on data collected by Voyager and her crew during their time in the Delta Quadrant were introduced to the Intrepid spaceframe, which resulted in the more advanced Intrepid II class.
However, by the late 2380s, significant breakthroughs in starship construction had made even the Intrepid II class obsolete. To bring the Intrepid platform up to date with modern standards by implementing technologies pioneered with starship classes such as the Armitage and Odyssey classes, Starfleet's Corps of Engineers met in 2390 to plan development of another Intrepid modernization program, named the Intrepid III project.
Many ideas were proposed for the Intrepid III project. So many, in fact, that it was simply not possible to cram all the ideas into a single class. And so, Starfleet's Corps of Engineers made the decision to split development of the Intrepid III project into a total of five Intrepid-based subclasses to be rolled out in two waves as the 24th century became the 25th. The first wave would consist of three of these subclasses; Cochrane, Discovery, and Bellerophon, while two more subclasses, Pathfinder and Trailblazer, would wait in the wings to have improvements from the Cochrane, Discovery, and Bellerophon classes implemented into their design and construction.
Though all five subclasses would feature a Quantum Slipstream Drive, the Bellerophon was chosen for implementation of an integrated cloaking device following a recent amendment to the Treaty of Algeron which permitted the Federation to experiment in cloaking technology not based on that utilized by the Romulan Star Empire.
The USS Missouri is a Bellerophon class Light Explorer. Originally laid down as an Intrepid II class starship, hull number NCC-78316 was selected for overhaul into a Bellerophon class following discontinuation of the Intrepid II class. Though she was renamed Missouri from her planned name of Branson thanks to a request from Commodore Kagami Izumi, one of the Missouri's Type 9 shuttles pays homage to the vessel's planned name by wearing the name Branson.
