894 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: I-402
Location: Various

Walking along the docking ports, Sara was looking for the docking birth of her new assignment, the USS Missouri. From what she’d been told, the ship is an upgraded variant of the intrepid class, a ship class originally designed for scientific discovery and research. However, this newer Bellerophon class was anything but a research vessel. Sara had to admit, she was very excited about this new assignment.

Finally finding the right docking port, Sara stopped for a moment to straighten up her uniform, grab her transfer orders from her bag and with a deep breath, she stared walking up the ramp to her future.

When she arrived at the airlock, two gold shirts were there to meet her: One of them was a Security Ensign there to check her credentials, and the other was the ship's quartermaster. It didn't take a doctor for one to observe that the latter of the two was heavily pregnant:

"Welcome aboard the Missouri." The quartermaster greeted, rubbing her large belly as her colleague in security cleared Sara's credentials. "Will you be needing to drop anything at your quarters?"

"No thank you, all of my personal items are in my bag here. Would you like to inspect my bag?" Sara asked, offering her bag for inspection. Sara had thought about congratulating the quartermaster on her pregnancy, but she had been told by a fellow officer on her last assignment that making such an assumption can be rather awkward.

The quartermaster nodded.

"Do you know the way to the turbolifts?" She then asked. It was a standard question, as some officers poured over deck plans before stepping aboard, while others needed to be guided to their destinations for the first few weeks.

“Ah no I do not, but that’s ok, I don’t mind strolling the ship for a while” Sara replied, giving the Quartermaster a smile. “Oh but now that I think of it, there is something of a personal request I’d like to make of you. Is it possible to have the sonic shower replaced by a water shower in my quarters?”

"I can put in a request with Engineering to do so." The quartermaster said as she created an invoice on her PADD. "Won't be as fancy as the captain's tub, but they'll be able to plumb something up for you."

"excellent, thank you. well I hope you have a good day and I look forward to seeing you in sickbay for a check up" Sara said as she gave the two officers bow.

"It may be more than a checkup, doc." The quartermaster groaned, stroking her belly. "Little Patrick here's just about ready to start pushing his way out."

"oh, then congratulations. You can be assured that I am more then qualified and experienced to deliver your child safely. Is the other parent onboard?" Sara asked, putting her bad down to one side of the corridor before turning her full attention to the Quartermaster.

"Nope." The Quartermaster responded. "Hubby's back on Schumacher III running the farm with the other kids. I know, you'd think there'd be no need for farmers in an age of replicators, but you'd be surprised. Sometimes real food is just better than its replicated counterpart."

“Not only that, but from what I’ve heard a great many people find a serene enjoyment in growing their own food. I admit, I have yet to sample many of the standard human foods” Sara said, giving the Quartermaster a smile, “forgive me for asking, but may I touch your stomach?”

"Sure." The quartermaster smiled.

Returning her smile, Sara gently placed a hand onto the Quartermaster's swollen belly and closed her eyes for a moment. upon making contact, She could feel the developing baby inside. Pulling her hand back, Sara gave the Quartermaster a slight bow, "thank you, your child is very healthy."

The quartermaster blinked in surprise.

"You could tell that... Just by touching my belly?" She asked rather curiously

“Hmm? Oh sorry, I forgot my manners. My species are touch telepaths. We can use physical contact to transfer information between minds, or in this case I can sense the child’s neurological activity and through that I could explore the basic medical condition of the child. Sorry, I should have explained before hand. I’ve been told I can act a little too familiar with people” Sara explained as she put on an apologetic smile.

"It's alright, so long as you didn't prematurely induce labor doing that." The quartermaster chuckled.

“Oh no I would never…” Sara began to say before realising that the quartermaster was laughing, “…oh, that was a joke. I’m still working on recognising human humour. It can be quite subtle at times I have found”

"Yeah, I've found our humor can be a bit of an acquired taste." The quartermaster shrugged. "Well, good luck getting your bearings, Doc, and welcome aboard."

"thank you, I hope my future supply requests don't cause your people any trouble" Sara replied, giving the woman a bow.

"There's no such thing as trouble when it comes to making our shipmates comfortable." The quartermaster returned the bow best she could, given her condition. "Welcome aboard, once again: I hope you'll be with us longer than the last two."
