| Personal History | Gavin was born on Tycho City on Luna in 2375 to Willis and Rheba Ralston. Growing up, he was the archetypal class clown who enjoyed the attention of others and had teachers lamenting that he was never living up to his potential. Thus, despite high test scores, he never excelled in school In 2390, whilst in the 10th grade, Gavin left school to pursue a technical trade as a mechanic. He entered into an apprenticeship at a shipyard and learned aspects of ship construction and design, as well as how to work and rebuild on starship engines. After completing his apprenticeship and working in the shipyards for another few years, he decided to enter Starfleet in 2393. Lacking the discipline and rigor required to be an officer, he instead entered basic enlisted training with the view of becoming a technical specialist. With many technical skills already learning from the shipyards, he was able to be pushed into some advanced courses to allow him to rate as a propulsion systems and computer specialist. After training, Ralston was assigned to the USS Potemkin in 2395 as a junior technician. He found himself at home working on the old-style engines and impressed his officers and department head with his work, although his interpersonal skills left much to be desired. After the decommissioning of the Potemkin in 2397, Ralston was moved to Utopia Planitia Fleetyards as a technician. Again, he was appraised as being flippant, annoying and immature despite competence. Another assignment came along in 2398. Assigned to the USS Galaxy, Ralston found himself involved with a drama group and was noted for having 'personas' with which he tried to amuse others. This caught the attention of the ship's Chief of Security, who required a partner for an undercover operation on a dangerous planet near Klingon space. Playing the role of the concubine, Gavin excelled himself and become a regular on operations requiring subterfuge and quick thinking. His reputation soon spread, and he found himself assigned to Earth Starbase in 2399. There he worked as an engineer, but often found himself attached to Starfleet Intelligence field teams as their technical operative. Along the way, he's picked up many skills, including some learnings in improvised demolitions. In 2390, he completed an assignment to Galorndon Core with Lieutenant Gabi Shimoda to investigate the appearance of a Vulcan propulsion engineer. On Starbase 72 when a staffing call went out to fight a rogue AI, Ralston was assigned to the USS Missouri as an engineer. |
