Personality & Traits

General Overview Gabi Shimoda is the model of a career Starfleet officer; disciplined, analytical and always ready for the next challenge. She takes her duty seriously and expects the same level of commitment from those around her. Years of service have taught her how to stay calm under pressure and make tough calls without hesitation. Privately, however, she is a different person; she is pretending something she’s not, racked with guilt, second guessing her every move and decision, worried that the next decision she makes could lead to disaster.

Gabi never planned to be a Starfleet officer. As a young person she idealised her botanist mother and was destined for a life in the sciences. However, strapped for options and seeking adventure after high school, she was enticed into a Starfleet that was desperate for new recruits.
As a cadet and young officer, Gabi never took her service too seriously. Shafted into the tactical program at the Academy, she found her dreams of a scientific career dying as she struggled for purpose. As a student and graduate officer, she was only ever interested in performing at a satisfactory level with a mediocre attitude, and so only ever had satisfactory and mediocre experiences as a junior officer.

A catastrophic event acted as a catalyst for the Gabi of today. From that day, she vowed to be the best officer she could be. Some say the old Gabi is dead, others reckon that she’s buried deep inside waiting to let loose.
Strengths & Weaknesses Gabi’s mind is highly analytical; she is a keen tactician and his highly proficient and possesses extensive knowledge of tactical systems and fleet operations. In addition, she’s a top-notch administrator. Gabi is in peak physical condition, spending considerable time working out to maintain her strength and fitness.

An icy personality and perfectionist attitude distances her from others, a coping mechanism to protect herself from her past and the burdens of command. Her empathy can be lacking when dealing with others, especially when expectations and appraisals come into play, and feelings can often be disregarded. This is no different to how she treats herself, in the way she doubts and appraises herself.

Outwardly, Gabi has been made in the mould of the officers who came before her, or at least what she considered that image to be. Appearing driven, self-assured and highly competent, she has made her own mind up about what a model officer looks like and adheres strictly to it. Indeed, she takes herself a little too seriously, others may claim she’s lost all the joy in her life and needs to have a little fun.

Privately, she wrestles with her career choices; her career has moved her away from the scientific. An inquiring scientific mind has given way to a tactical one, and her intellectual curiosity has given way to a martial mindset. Outside of required Academy learning, she has little scientific knowledge and can lack the ‘exploratory’ or 'diplomatic' instinct of the archetypal Starfleet officer. In many ways, therefore, her life isn’t one she expected.
Ambitions Gabi spent years with her eyes on starship command. However, after a smattering of short-term team leads and a couple of short-term commands on smaller ships, she's ready for something bigger, though has some doubts about her ability. Ultimately, Gabi would like to make some lateral moves into the administration at Starfleet Tactical or Starfleet Intelligence to help make the ‘big decisions’. Just quietly, she wouldn’t hate the sound of “Admiral Gabrielle Shimoda” in her later career.

Secretly, she's torn. In the hopes of reconciling with her childhood self, she would like to learn more about the universe and recapture that wonder. In some ways, she has found herself at a fork in the road as a human being.
Hobbies & Interests Gabi maintains a strict workout regimen. She developed this in consultation with Commander T’Pran and Chief Kitty Hartman, Starfleet’s foremost authorities on nutrition and PT instruction at Starfleet Academy. She will recommend her program to anyone who shows the faintest interest.

She can also be found researching military history from many cultures, trying new martial arts, ironing her uniform (even her socks), finding ways to make ship’s systems more efficient, finding excuses to work. She revels in putting her own needs aside for the uniform. It is also rumoured that she enjoys playing and watching the sport Matina’par, which is akin to Bolian basketball.

Personal History Gabrielle Kaydee Shimoda was born in 2372 on Stardate 49455.9 (a Thursday). She was born on Cestus III to Felicity and James Shimoda, a botanist and engineer, respectively. From a young age, Gabi idolised her scientist mother and spent every waking moment assisting her in her work while her father worked in starship construction.

Growing up in Pike City, Gabi spent her life sheltered from the conflicts of the Federation. She spent her schooling preparing for a life of science, however, as she grew older, she grew more rebellious and beyond the control and influence of her parents. She turned martial arts training into an excuse to get into brawls, and found her peaceful environment too docile, even in comparison to the paradise of Earth.

Sucked into a recruitment drive run by Starfleet, an organisation licking its wounds after a decade of conflict and heavily losses, the wayward Gabi hopped on a transport to Earth with a pre-approved admission to Starfleet Academy. Slipping on her new uniform, she had words like adventure, action and excitement ringing in her head. The reality was quite to the contrary.

Gabi was a party girl, forsaking studies and scraping by in the Academy in favour of nights out and quick hookups. Hot blooded, aggressive and practical, she excelled in courses focused on combat and tactical systems. Her strengths being recognised and enough for her to graduate in 2391 as an Ensign.

With less than stellar appraisals of her abilities and a low overall academic score, Gabi found herself on Starbase 13 as a tactical officer. A backwater by any stretch of the imagination, the Starbase was little more than a trading post for minor species. Like the Academy, it was an environment that exacerbated her partying ways, with hangovers and low effort being inconsequential in a job that was just as insignificant. Amongst a mediocre performance, she also found herself involved with shenanigans and criminal rackets that threatened to sully her reputation, though kept her entertained.

Over two years at Starbase 13, Gabi was passed over for promotion multiple times until she reached her second year as an officer. Required to transfer to a starship position as part of her junior officer tour, she was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2392. This was only achieved through the grace of Starbase 13’s CO, who knew a lack of promotion at this stage in her career would have her ejected from service.

A transfer to the USS Aquarius seemed to be a backward step. In a more structed and regimented environment, Gabi found herself getting up the nose of her superiors. Noted as being rebellious, surly and difficult in performance reviews, it was her knowledge of systems, technical know-how and analytical mind that kept her career afloat.

Despite a challenging reputation, the young tactical officer was recognised for her actions at the tactical console on more than one occasion. In early 2393, while the relief tactical officer on the bridge of the Aquarius, the vessel came under attack by a rogue Klingon warship while the senior staff were on a routine away mission. During the skirmish, Shimoda successfully repelled the vessel’s attack using her knowledge of the attacking vessel’s systems. This allowed the Aquarius to disable to attacker and arrest the crew in a boarding action.

In another instance, the Aquarius was held under siege in orbit of the planet Costello IX by an automated, undetectable surface-based sentry defence system. Shimoda devised a strategy to use remotely controlled small craft to reveal the locations and worked with the engineering department to devise a computer program that could rapidly calculate a firing solution for a torpedo bombardment that allowed the vessel to leave orbit.

In the last weeks of Gabi’s assignment to the Aquarius, the vessel visited Farius Prime on a brief layover. While on the surface, her shipmate and friend Ensign Roiba was killed in a stabbing during shore leave. With the Farius police department taking little interest in the incident, Gabi went against orders to investigate the death. She successfully used her analytical and investigative skills, and criminal connections from Starbase 13, to uncover further evidence. This evidence was combined with information she had stolen from the Farius police database to conclusively uncover the murderer.

Though Shimoda made a case to her captain, there was nothing that could be acted upon by the Aquarius crew without risking a diplomatic incident. While quietly praising Gabi determination, her Captain questioned Gabi’s methods and adherence to orders, resulting in an informal reprimand. Before the Aquarius left orbit, the vapourised remains of the killer were later found in a warehouse outside the city, allowing Starfleet and the Farius Prime authorities to consider the matter closed.

With quiet suspicion and unease resting on a shaken Shimoda in the weeks after, she requested a transfer. Her captain, noting Gabi’s capabilities as a tactician with extensive systems knowledge, used her connections to earn Gabi a position as a tutor at Starfleet Academy. This came with a warning that this was a final chance to save her career.

A sombre Gabi struggled to find her place in the academic environment, though did enjoy challenging cadets with new simulations and scenarios. Lost again, she found herself under the tutelage of regular campus gymgoers Commander T’Pran and Chief Kitty Hartman, who were responsible for developing the training regime of cadets and officers.

Allowed to assist them in their development of a fitness curriculum, she began to find her place. Working with T’Pran, she also learned to discipline her mind and began to understand the need to curb her wild ways.

With a demonstrated proficiency in handling intelligence alongside her tactical prowess, Gabi also assisted Starfleet Intelligence by summarising reports that came in from starships on the frontier. With a growing reputation in this space, she was offered a transfer to Starbase 715 on the Tholian border as Chief Intelligence Officer. There, she found herself directing Starfleet’s intelligence interests in that area of operations. In the year holding this position, she found herself in the field several times, including an investigation into illegal arms deals on the border and later, a proposed alliance between the Tholians and Gorn. In response to this threat, Gabi was responsible for advising Starfleet on the deployment of military assets to respond to this alliance.

With a few incursions occurring into Federation space in the Tholian area of operations, Gabi was transferred to the command ship in the area, the Nebula Class USS Del Sol. She served as Chief Tactical Officer, with an additional responsibility as second officer. In this capacity, she was able to provide key intelligence and tactical appraisals and interpret Tholian fleet movements to allow Starfleet, and the Del Sol, to respond at a moment’s notice.

With the Federation Diplomatic Corps securing a renewed non-aggression pact with the Federation later in the year, the area’s hostilities cooled, and most starships were removed from the area to avoid an intimidating posture. Wasted in her role and recognised once more for her keen analytical abilities, Gabi was transferred to Starfleet Tactical on Earth. There, she was central to advising on fleet formations and deployments across Federation space. Throughout this assignment she was offered a number of temporary commands of small vessels or missions with tactical teams facilitated by Starfleet and the Marines, which allowed her to gain leadership experience. Often these missions included tactical systems testing, appraisals of technologies offered to the Federation, or reconnaissance of foreign powers.
